What should the first use case prove?

A first deployment has two jobs. It must determine whether the defined visual decision can be made reliably in the actual production environment. It must also show whether the organization can operate the inspection after initial implementation.

A technically interesting model that has no clear response, owner, or maintenance process does not establish a scalable plant capability. The first use case should therefore prove the complete system: imaging, data, decision, deployment, workflow, ownership, and change management.

Who should select the use case?

The decision should not be made by technology leadership alone. Include the quality expert who defines the condition, the process owner who understands where it appears, the engineering or automation owner who understands the line environment, and the plant sponsor who owns the operational result.

Operators and supervisors often hold essential knowledge about variation, workarounds, product transitions, and the moments when a camera view becomes unreliable. Bring them into discovery early.

Four first-use-case traps

1. Choosing the largest financial problem

The largest loss may involve several interacting causes, limited visual evidence, or a response outside the inspection system. Value matters, but feasibility and ownership matter too.

2. Treating a product demonstration as production validation

A demonstration can show that a visual distinction is plausible. Production validation must cover expected variation, camera conditions, false responses, operational consequences, and change.

3. Starting without a data-collection plan

Teams need representative examples from real operating conditions. Define how examples will be captured, reviewed, labeled, protected, and retained.

4. Ignoring the action after detection

Detection is not the outcome. Decide who reviews the event, what is contained, how disposition is handled, and what evidence must be retained.

  • Name the product, line, station, and process step.
  • Define the visible condition in plant language.
  • Identify acceptable variation that must not be treated as a defect.
  • List available example images and missing evidence.
  • Document camera, lighting, speed, mounting, and interface constraints.

  • Agree on validation measures before model work begins.

The team should finish with a working inspection and a better understanding of how to implement the next one.

What comes after the first deployment?

After validation, document what can repeat: image-collection practices, ownership roles, review processes, edge deployment patterns, change controls, and escalation paths. Then return to the opportunity inventory and select the next use case based on value and fit.
